Responsive and Mobile Websites
Ever wanted to pull your hair out over a website on your smart phone or tablet that is garbled and impossible to navigate? Maybe you looked up your Atlanta dentist’s website in the car for directions while rushing to an appointment, but the content appears too tiny to read and you have to enlarge the screen so much you can only read three words at a time. Or the words overlap and you can’t even touch items to select them like you could with a mouse. Well, the culprit is fixed web design, and it is thankfully going the way of the dinosaurs. The good news is responsive web design has evolved in its place, and allows websites to be viewed on all devices with ease. What exactly is responsive web design and why do you need it? Allow me to explain.
What is Responsive Web Design?
Responsive web design is a way of structuring a website so that it automatically adjusts to any screen size, no matter what kind. In years past, websites were viewed from desktop screens only and websites had a fixed design – meaning they were displayed in the same manner every time. But, along came the iPhone…and the iPad…and the Kindle Fire…and about a zillion other mobile devices on the market, and red flags went up. Mobile devices have different screen sizes and resolutions from desktops and websites would display all wrong on them, making some websites unusable on-the-go.
Atlanta responsive web design has come to the rescue. This design allows websites to, you guessed it, respond to different screen sizes, and load them seamlessly on any device. Whereas fixed design is centered on a fixed number of pixels in a display, responsive design uses proportions for items on any given page. If elements on a page are placed in proportion to each other, they will be displayed proportionally on any screen size, instead of being resized awkwardly. For example, when viewing a fixed website on a mobile device, the entire page may load slowly and have the same layout as on a desktop, but the content will be too tiny to read and navigating all of the pages on the site becomes a headache. But, a responsive website resizes the display in relation to the screen size, and doesn’t need all of the pages a desktop version does in order to display all of the content. The result is a happy user who can quickly and easily find just what they are looking with the touch of a finger.
Why do our clients need a responsive web design?
The numbers speak for themselves. In the U.S, 171 million people own a smartphone or other mobile device. That’s 71 percent of all people in the country; that’s 71 percent of our clients’ customer base. Not surprisingly, a whopping 60 percent of traffic comes from mobile devices. Potential customers of all businesses are on-the-go and expect their mobile devices to give them immediate and useful information from websites they visit. To keep up with that demand, responsive web design (or mobile websites) are imperative for each and every website, and our goal is to design websites for our Atlanta, surrounding areas, and national clients that successfully reach the maximum customer base possible on the devices customers want to use. We keep our clients’ website marketing needs a top priority with the use of responsive websites, so that their customers can find their services easily at a desk or on the road. By responding to the mobile lifestyle and needs of website users, our clients prevent their businesses, like fixed web design, from going the way of the dinosaurs, too.
